Adopt a Cat

Adopting a cat is not something to be undertaken lightly. Cats can live as long as 15 years, sometimes longer, and Animal matters to me, Mumbai wants to ensure that any cats it places for adoption go to people who will provide them with an appropriate, clean, safe, family environment, will feed them properly, take care of them when they are sick, and will – above all – give them love until the end of their days.

How do we know the cat I choose will be right for me?
To help ensure that the cat you adopt suits you, and you suit the cat, we may ask you a number of questions. For example:

  • Do you have lots of time to entertain an energetic kitten?
  • Or are you looking for an older, calm cat to cuddle up to?
  • Do you have an outdoor space that your cat can explore safely? Or is your home big enough for an indoor-only cat?
  • Is the boundary of your garden strong and high enough to keep dogs out?
  • Do you already have a pet? If so, what kind of temperament does your existing pet have? If you have a dog, how is your dog with cats?
  • Do you have young children?
  • If you are an expatriate living in India, do you have plans to return to your home country in the future? Some countries have very strict laws that make importing pets from India very costly and difficult.
  • If you already have pet and/or small children, please bring them with you when you come to choose your cat. Photos of your home and garden will also be helpful.

If you cannot visit us to choose your cat, our Adoptions team will contact you with similar questions.

Do we have to go to the AMTM to choose a cat, or can I choose one that is displayed on the website?
If you live in Mumbai or nearby you should come to the AMTM Rehab to choose your cat. Even if you live further away it is a good idea . So please contact our Adoptions team and they will guide you through the process.
How much must we pay to adopt from AMTM?
All adoptions are free – we are delighted to see our rescue cats go to good, loving homes. If you live in Mumbai, you can collect your new family member from the Rehab by our adoption procedures.Your only cost will be the cost of getting your pet to your home.

If you would like to make a donation to help rescue more cats in need, we would welcome your kind support.
Are the cats house-trained?
All AMTM animals are sterilized and fully vaccinated. Cats are generally very clean animals and all of the cats at the AMTM Rehab are accustomed to using a litter tray.
Can I get a little kitten from AMTM?
We do not usually make very small kittens available for adoption. This is because young kittens need to drink their mothers’ milk until they are weaned. Without this, their immune system may not be fully developed and they will be more likely to get sick.

(This is also why you should never buy young kittens from a pet shop, no matter how cute they are.)

As a result, almost all the cats we offer for adoption are at least six months old.

Do you have pedigree cats for adoption?
Some of the AMTM rescue animals are pedigree cats but most are mixed-breed. When rescuing animals we make no distinction. But as the word stray means alley or street, the animals rescued by AMTM are usually from the streets, where pedigree cats are not that common.

You should know that there is good evidence that mixed-breed cats are generally more intelligent than pure-breeds, are healthier, and often live longer.

We have over one hundred cats in need of homes. To see just some of them, please see this page.

Adopt a Dog

Adopting a dog is not something to be undertaken lightly.

Dogs can live as long as 20 years, sometimes longer, and we want to ensure that any dog that is adopted go to people who will provide them with an appropriate, clean, safe, family environment, will feed them properly, take care of them when they are sick, and will – above all – give them love until the end of their days.
