Why stray animals should be adopted

When we think of getting a pet, stray dogs and cats never come to mind because of the long-held perception that they are ‘dirty’ or ‘less than’ compared to expensive purebred pets that people generally prefer.

Most people don’t realise that strays are equally capable of being lovable pets in our homes as any fancy breed that can be purchased. Here are some reasons why you should adopt strays:

They are low maintenance

Stray animals are generally the indie breeds that have existed in India for millenia. They are very comfortable with the terrain and weather and thrive without much effort. They do not require the intense care and attention that pure breeds do, and are quite hassle-free.

Strong immunity

Stray dogs have a strong immunity and do not fall ill easily. They are less vulnerable to hereditary diseases than pure breeds are on account of their often being mixed breeds.

There will be very few vet visits required and home cooked food is all these angels need, though certain foods should be avoided. To know more, please take a look at Food You Should Never Give A Dog and What Not To Feed A Cat.

Highly intelligent

Stray animals are generally very intelligent as they are constantly in an environment where they have to fight to survive. They are curious and quick learners, which makes it easy to train them.

Loyalty

Strays are very loyal. As many people do not feed them, they easily bond with people who provide them food and water.

As this is essential for their survival, they generally respond by showing affection and trust and becoming protective of their humans as well.

Sharing a home with someone who needs it

Similar to helping out a friend in need, providing strays a safe refuge with food and shelter is the biggest boon they could ask for. It is all they want and desire along with your love and affection. By sharing your home with them, you not only take care of their needs, but also save their lives.

Low cost

Unlike pure breeds, stray animals don’t come with an exorbitant price tag. Pure breeds often come with many hereditary diseases and breeders are unable to guarantee how long they will live. This is not an issue with strays thanks to their strong immunity and healthy bodies. Strays do not require expensive medical procedures unlike pure breeds, and hardly ever need to go to the vet.
